medical professional explaining to client that post-traumatic stress disorder is just one of many conditions treatedPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs when a person is exposed to a traumatic event that overwhelms their ability to cope and process the experience. PTSD is a complex condition that affects individuals in different ways. Some may experience intrusive memories of the event, while others may avoid any reminders of the trauma.

At TRU Wellness Center, post-traumatic stress disorder is just one of the conditions we treat at our Minnesota and Arizona locations. If you or a loved one experienced a traumatic event and are struggling with symptoms, our PTSD centers in Minnetonka, MN, and Gilbert, AZ, offer comprehensive outpatient treatment.

What Are Some Common Sources of PTSD?

PTSD results when a person experiences a traumatic event that overwhelms their ability to cope and process the experience. This can be a one-time event, like a natural disaster or car accident, or a persistent experience like abuse or neglect. Some common sources of post-traumatic stress disorder include the following:

  • Military combat
  • Sexual assault or abuse
  • Physical assault or violence
  • Natural disasters
  • Witnessing a traumatic event
  • Childhood trauma and neglect

Although anyone who has experienced significant trauma can develop PTSD, combat veterans and first responders are some of the most susceptible. In the last several years, PTSD has started to receive the attention it has needed. The number of active-duty military, veterans, and first responders who have either lost their lives from the effects of PTSD or have permanent disability from the mental illness is unacceptable. Slow progress from the VA in providing adequate care, up until now, has kept many military members from seeking treatment.

What Are the Symptoms of PTSD?

Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder can vary in intensity and duration. Still, they generally fall into four categories: intrusive memories, avoidance behaviors, negative changes in mood and thinking, and changes in physical and emotional reactions.

These may include the following:

  • Flashbacks or nightmares of the traumatic event
  • Avoidance of situations that remind one of the trauma
  • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems
  • Negative thoughts about oneself or others
  • Increased anxiety and unease

One of the primary symptoms of PTSD can be a re-experiencing of the traumatic event (through nightmares, flashbacks, and intrusive memories), which occurs either by a trigger or unexpectedly.

Avoiding any triggers to the memory can be an exhausting experience, which can lead to other unintended effects, such as:

  • Social isolation
  • Insomnia
  • Substance use
  • Aggressive behaviors
  • Depression

Substance use is often employed as a coping mechanism for other symptoms, which leads to further problems of addiction and dependency.

My role may involve creating and setting the desired tone of the session and using co-regulation techniques such as breathing and mindfulness, as well as the integration and processing of your experience. I am currently enrolled at Bethel University in their master’s program for clinical mental health counseling.
